Back to front page

On Department of Fair Trading's web site, a self assessment tool is available to confirm that you meet the necessary requirements and hence qualify for an owner builder permit.

The self assessment asks a series of questions requiring a Yes/No answer. The answer will influence the next question asked. The questions cover the following issues:

  • Is building work subject to development consent?

  • Will you be engaging a licensed builder to coordinate or supervise the work?

  • Have you commenced the building works?

  • Have you held an owner builder permit in the last 5 years?

  • Are you over 18 years of age?

  • Is building work valued at over $12K?

  • Have you completed the course in Owner Builder Compliance Course?

  • Do you own the land or premises?

  • Will you be living at premises?

  • Are you building a single dwelling?

If you meet the requirements for an owner builder permit, the assessment tool will identify the appropriate Application Form for you to complete and you can print the applicable form from the linked web site.

The self assessment tool is designed to highlight the owner builder permit criteria which will clearly identify any non-compliant aspects. For instance, if you have commenced the building works, you are not eligible to apply for an owner builder permit. If you have held an owner builder permit in the last 5 years and the application is not for the same property, you are not eligible to apply for an owner builder permit.

The self assessment tool would be useful to do if you have any doubts regarding your eligibility to apply and also prior to going to the Department of Fair Trading to collect your owner builder permit to ensure you are familiar with the requirements.

The Fair Trading web site is quite complex. Once you are on the web site go to Tenants & Home Owners, then Home building & renovating, Becoming an owner-builder, How do I get an owner builder permit? Click on Owner-builder self assessment tool page and start the self assessment tool.

If you have any questions on the owner builder permit application process, please contact DirectBuild Australia. The team at DirectBuild would be pleased to help.
